Arsenic and Old Lace

Written by Joseph Otto Kesslring, the comedy Arsenic and Old Lace was shown in the Trapp Auditorium Thursday-Saturday at 7:00pm and Sunday at 2:00pm. The play features two aunts that give lonely people wine with arsenic for charitable reasons. The aunts, Abby and Martha Brewster, have three nephews named Teddy, Mortimer, and Jonathan. Teddy believes he is Teddy Roosevelt, and Jonathan is a criminal wanted for murder that has been gone for a very long time. Of the three nephews, Mortimer, a play critic, seems to be the most sane, until he tells his aunts he wants to marry a girl named Elaine. Naive about the aunts’ acts of murder, Mortimer only learns of the murdered men’s dead bodies when he opens a window seat containing one, just after he made his decision to marry Elaine. After opening the window seat, things get complicated between him and everyone else in the play, as Jonathan and Einstein come in with another dead body and the cops try to get to the bottom of it all.
